Designing For Mobile: Users & Context

All mobile devices can be placed into 4 different categories.

General purpose work devices. Laptop and tablets.

Entertainment devices. Handheld gaming devices, MP3 players and portable video player.

Communication devices. Mobile phones.

Targeted devices. Devices that are specifically designed for a small number of tasks i.e. GPS devices.

What’s happening these day is that smartphones are doing all of the above. When designing for mobile, you are designing for a context. You can’t control how the phone will be used or the environment the phone is used in.
