Labor Day Bar-B-Que

Today, Labor Day 2012, Diego, Chayo and I went out to have some Labor Day fun at a friends house. When we returned home, we sat in our living room to watch a little TV before putting them to bed. We heard sirens in the neighborhood, but assumed they were going to the apartment complex a couple blocks away like they always do. Not even 5 seconds later I looked out the back window because it looked like daytime back there. I saw the neighbors house on fire. I couldn’t tell it was just the garage at first because the flames were so high. This went down at approximately 10PM. I ran to the back yard and got my phone out and captured the following video.

Update 09/04/2012

After work today, the boys and I rode our bikes around the block to get a better look at the damage from last nites house fire. Standing outside was our neighbor Mindy, who moved in only 3 weeks ago. She lives right next door to the house that caught on fire and directly behind us. Her house is the other house in the video that looks like it was about to catch on fire. I found out that the residence were home, but were able to get out in time. They’re were no children in the house… thank God. Miraculously they had time to get the Corvette out of the garage before it went up in flames. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

Another sad aspect of this story is that they were a week away from putting their house on the market. I have noticed over the last year or so that they were making a lot of home improvements.

This is an eye opener for me. I will be making sure that we have a plan in place in case of a fire. Checking the batteries in the fire detector and installing one in the garage. You never know when something like this will happen. We all say “it’ll never happen to me”, but we can no longer be that naive. I can happen to you.
